2017: Transmiss.io/n
“Arrival meets Pokemon Go: a distributed performance and podcast series about first contact with alien life.
Transmission is an immersive theatre production that tells the story of two brilliant sisters selected to join a mission to meet our celestial neighbors. Their story is told through a live show at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a podcast, and several site-specific, augmented reality scenes that are linked to specific locations throughout Edinburgh.”
Collaboration with Ian Garret and Toasterlab for the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, we created a custom iOS app to deliver geo-locative narrative content around the city. The app combined GPS, push notification, and 360 video delivery.
To facilitate this, a companion authoring tool was developed which allowed the showrunners to create and update the script even after the app was pushed to audience phones. This tool was built on the work done for [Summer of Darkness]({{ site.baseurl }}{% link _posts/2016-06-01-SummerOfDarkness.md%}) but added integration with cloud services (Vimeo in particular) to support distribution of media, as well as multiple users and the addition of an actual world map. This work represented v1 of the authoring tool which would become the [Emplacement]({{ site.baseurl }}{% link _posts/2018-05-01-Emplacement.md %}) project.
