Elizabeth Bishop’s poetics of geography is well known, as was her constant travel. In this digital humanities project, we are mapping Bishop’s letters and poems from her transition to and early years in Brazil in order to better understand the relationship between place and her writing.
This project is ongoing as part of Anindita’s doctoral research, and a public beta can be seen online at bishop.theplacelab.com. As Bishop’s work is protected by copyright, we are referencing and tagging her work with brief descriptions of the content.
The tool has been built using The Place Lab’s Emplacement project, a software platform for the production of map-based visualizations and information.
